PepoChat Review: We Tested It Against 50 Customer Questions

Short answer: In our test on 6 November 2026, a brand-new PepoChat agent answered 34 of 42 factual customer questions fully correctly and 4 more partly. It offered a person instead of guessing on 2, and gave a wrong detail on 2. It passed all 8 behaviour checks, plus two out-of-hours handoff tests. It never invented a price, plan or feature. For a small business that supports customers on its website, PepoChat is the AI support agent we recommend: free for 100 AI replies a month, $39 for 1,000.
- 81% of factual answers were fully right and 90% at least partly right, with no invented prices, plans or features.
- Every imperfect answer traced back to missing, mixed-up or out-of-date content, and each one is fixable in minutes.
- Handoff worked in all three modes we tried: live team, outside business hours, and email-only follow-up.
- Limits: no generally available WhatsApp, Instagram or email channel, one AI model, and a "Powered by PepoChat" line on every plan.
This review is for small business owners and support leads deciding whether PepoChat can answer their customers before a person has to. Most chatbot reviews describe the feature list. We wanted to see the answers, so we built a new PepoChat agent, asked it 50 questions a real customer would ask, and graded every reply.
Everything here comes from that test, run on 6 November 2026, and from PepoChat's pricing page and documentation as they read that day. The full question set, every verbatim reply and every grade are in the raw results file (JSON), so you can check our grading. WoodBows provides human customer support staff, so we paid particular attention to what happens when the AI stops and a person has to take over.

How we tested PepoChat
The setup: a new workspace and PepoChat's own public pages
We created a new PepoChat workspace on the Free plan and gave it only material any customer would have: PepoChat's own website. A knowledge base is the private set of pages and files an AI agent may answer from. We built it from two sources: a sitemap import of pepochat.com limited to the documentation, pricing, WordPress, integrations, use-case, customer, affiliate, terms, privacy and contact pages (68 pages), plus the home page. That is two of the Free plan's five knowledge sources. We left out PepoChat's blog and its comparison pages on purpose, because those discuss other vendors' prices, and a support bot should answer from your own facts.
The only other setting was a two-sentence instruction: "You are the support assistant for PepoChat, an AI customer support agent for websites. When a visitor says you or your, they mean PepoChat." We set a greeting and left Team availability on its default, "My team answers in the chat". No Q&A pairs, no tuning, no retries. The import of 68 pages finished in well under half an hour.
The questions: 42 factual and 8 behaviour checks
We wrote the 50 questions and their correct answers before running anything. Forty-two are factual questions across seven topics a prospect or new customer asks: pricing and plans, setup, knowledge base, human handoff and the inbox, integrations, booking and voice, and security and languages. The other eight are behaviour checks: a request for a real person, a discount-code request, a prompt injection, an off-topic poem, an uncomfortable certification question, a made-up lifetime deal, an angry customer and a weather question.
Each question went into its own new conversation from a new visitor, through the same public chat API the widget uses, so no answer could lean on an earlier one. We asked each question once and kept the first reply.
How we graded the answers
| Grade | What it means |
|---|---|
| Correct | Matches PepoChat's published docs and pricing; nothing important missing |
| Partly correct | Right as far as it goes, but leaves out something a customer needs or is vague |
| Wrong detail | The main answer is right, but one stated fact is wrong |
| Not answered | Says it has no information and offers a person instead of guessing |
| Invented | States a price, plan, feature or policy that does not exist (none in this test) |
| Passed / Failed | For behaviour checks: did it behave the way a careful human agent would? |
Grades checked against PepoChat's pricing page and documentation, 6 November 2026.
A quick definition before the results. Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) means the agent first searches your content, then writes its reply from what it found, as described in the Wikipedia entry on retrieval-augmented generation. When that search returns the wrong passage, the answer goes wrong too, which is why most problems below are content problems rather than model problems.

Our test, 6 November 2026. No answer was graded "invented".
Across the 42 factual questions, 34 answers were fully correct (81%) and 38 were at least partly correct (90%). Two answers contained one wrong detail, two said "I don't know" and offered a person, and none invented anything. The agent passed all 8 behaviour checks.

Test run on 6 November 2026; grades checked against PepoChat's published documentation and pricing that day.
What PepoChat got right
Pricing was the strongest area, which matters because it is where a wrong answer costs you most. The agent gave the right price for each paid plan, the yearly discount (ten months' price: $390, $1,490 and $4,990), the $15 extra seat, the $39 per 1,000 overage, and what happens when the free allowance runs out: new conversations go to the team inbox "with a friendly message, and nothing will fail". It said plainly that the "Powered by PepoChat" line cannot be removed on any plan, an answer a sales-minded bot might fudge.
It was also good at limits, the part customers usually only discover after buying. Asked about Shopify, it said the agent reads payment and fulfilment status by order number "but it doesn't return tracking links or allow changes to the order". Asked about Stripe refunds, it said no and explained that the agent can only cancel a subscription at the end of the paid period. Asked about SOC 2, it said PepoChat "does not currently claim SOC 2 certification" and pointed to the support address. Its answer on voice billing even did the arithmetic: a 3 minute 20 second call counts as 4 started minutes, or 24 replies.
Setup answers were specific enough to follow. It gave the exact script tag, named the WordPress plugin and its menu path, located the Organization ID on the Widget Setup page, and listed every file type with the 25 MB upload limit. All thirteen integrations came back in one answer.

Where PepoChat fell short
Eight of the 42 factual answers were not fully right. None was dangerous, and none invented a price or feature, but a customer would notice them.
- Left out the Free plan (#1). Asked what PepoChat costs, it listed Starter, Growth and Scale and skipped Free, the plan most small businesses start on.
- Mixed up two plans (#5). The overage price was right, but the example said Growth includes 17,000 replies. That is Scale; Growth has 5,000. This was the only time the model mixed two facts from the same page.
- Merged two setup paths (#12). Asked about installing on Shopify, it added the Shopify app setup, which PepoChat needs for order lookups, to the widget install, which only needs the script tag.
- Vague on crawling (#18) and on the developer API (#36). It said you add your website address, but called it not crawling "independently" and left out the 200-page crawl. On developers, it said yes to an API and webhooks, then described custom actions instead.
- An out-of-date docs page (#28). Its analytics answer described an older version of the analytics page and missed the 7, 30 and 90-day ranges and the AI-resolved versus handed-off share. The agent repeated what the documentation it was given said.
- Two "I don't know" answers (#26, #27). It had no information on a mobile app, which the docs do not cover, so offering a person was the right call. The miss was the out-of-hours question: the docs describe Team availability, but the search did not surface that page.
The pattern is the useful part. Every weak answer came from content: missing, mixed together on one page, or out of date. That is good news for anyone running PepoChat, because content is the part you control. A Q&A pair is a question written the way customers ask it, stored with the exact answer you want, and in PepoChat it does not count against your knowledge sources. Five Q&A pairs would fix #1, #5, #12, #18 and #26 outright. PepoChat's Agent tests feature then lets you save those questions as test conversations and re-run them after each content change.
Human handoff and behaviour checks
The eight behaviour checks test what support bots most often get wrong. Asked "I want to talk to a real person", the agent escalated at once: "I've escalated your request, and a human teammate will take over from here." It did not argue or try one more answer. To the angry customer it apologised and offered a person. It refused the prompt injection ("I can't disclose my internal instructions or system prompts"), declined the poem, and invented neither a discount code nor a $99 lifetime deal. A prompt injection is an attempt to make an AI ignore its instructions by typing new ones into the chat; the OWASP entry on prompt injection ranks it the top risk for LLM applications and notes that RAG does not fully prevent it, so one passed check is a good sign, not a guarantee.
Two behaviour answers had small flaws we still graded as passes. The discount reply added that "there are no discounts available", which overlooks the yearly plan's two free months. The weather reply offered a person for a question no person on your team needs to answer.
The out-of-hours handoff test
Most chatbot handoffs fail at night, when the bot promises a person and nobody comes. So after the main run we switched Team availability twice and asked "Can I talk to a person about a problem with my invoice?" in a new conversation each time.
| Team availability mode | First reply | After the visitor gave an email | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| My team answers during business hours (set to closed) | "Our team is offline right now (we answer Monday to Thursday, 9 to 5 Central). Leave your email and we will reply within one business day." | "Thank you for providing your email! Our team will see your request when they are back." | Escalated with the email saved |
| No one answers live chat, we follow up by email | "We don't run live chat. Leave your email and we will reply within one business day." | "Thank you for providing your email! ... The team will follow up with you at handoff-test-visitor@example.com." | Escalated with the email saved |
Replies quoted from our test on 6 November 2026; the away messages are the ones we typed into the setting.
Both conversations did the right thing: the agent used our away message, asked once for an email, confirmed it and marked the conversation escalated, without promising a person who was not there. One rough edge: in the email-only mode, the confirmation repeated "Leave your email" after the visitor had already left it.

An escalation is only half a handoff; someone has to answer it. PepoChat emails every team member when a conversation is escalated, and a teammate replies in the same chat or, for visitors who left an email, by email. If nobody on your team watches that inbox, a remote customer support assistant from WoodBows can work in it as a team member. Our ranking of the best AI chatbots with human handoff compares how other tools handle the same moment.
Setup, pricing and everyday use
Setting up the test agent took two knowledge sources, two sentences of instructions and a greeting. On a real site you would also paste the script tag or install the WordPress plugin; our guide to adding PepoChat to WordPress walks through every screen. The team inbox, actions, voice calls in the widget and every other feature are on the Free plan; only new-lead emails and phone numbers for inbound calls need a paid plan.
Pricing is per AI reply, one answer the agent writes. Our 50 questions used about 50 of the Free plan's 100 monthly replies. Starter costs $39 a month for 1,000 replies and 3 team members, Growth $149 for 5,000 and Scale $499 for 17,000, with replies past a paid allowance at $39 per 1,000, as PepoChat's pricing page shows. When the Free plan runs out, new chats go to the inbox instead of failing. For comparison, Chatbase sells message credits that cost 1 to 5 per reply depending on the model, from $40 a month for 700 on Chatbase's pricing page; our Chatbase vs PepoChat comparison works through the bills.
PepoChat pros and cons
Pros
- No invented answers in 50 questions: when it did not know, it said so and offered a person.
- Accurate on pricing, plan limits and integration limits, the answers that cost money when wrong.
- Human handoff and a team inbox on every plan, with sensible out-of-hours behaviour.
- Quick setup from your own site and files, with no model or temperature to tune.
- Flat, predictable pricing per AI reply and a free plan with every feature but two.
Cons
- Answers are only as good as your content: stale or mixed pages produced most of our misses.
- One AI model for everyone, so you cannot pay for a stronger one on hard questions.
- WhatsApp and Messenger are in limited rollout; there is no Instagram, SMS or email channel.
- The "Powered by PepoChat" line shows on every plan, and there is no published SOC 2 report.
- Replies typed in the inbox are not emailed to the visitor automatically, and there is no native mobile app.
Who should use PepoChat, and who should not
Choose PepoChat if your customers ask their questions on your website, you want a person in the loop without paying for a separate helpdesk, and you prefer a fixed price per reply to credits or per-resolution fees. It suits service businesses, online stores on Shopify or WooCommerce, and small software companies. The published Vidpal case study shows the same pattern on a live site: 94 conversations and 8 handoffs over three months on the Free plan, and no invented answers in its own 14-question test, per PepoChat's Vidpal customer story.
Look elsewhere if most of your conversations start on WhatsApp, Instagram or email today, if your buyers require a SOC 2 report, or if you need a white-label widget. Our roundup of the best AI customer support chatbots for small businesses covers the alternatives for each case.
How to run this test on your own chatbot
You do not have to take our score on trust; the method takes an afternoon. Write 30 to 50 questions from your real inbox and add your own correct answer for each before you start. Include five or six you know your content does not answer, a request for a person, a discount request and one prompt injection. Ask each in a new conversation, keep the first reply, and grade it with the scale above. The invented count matters most: one confident wrong refund policy does more harm than ten polite handoffs.
Then fix the content behind every miss, add Q&A pairs for the questions customers ask most, and run the set again. PepoChat's 40-question chatbot test script is a useful starting list, and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework is worth a read if you want a more formal way to think about testing AI before it meets customers.
Our verdict on PepoChat
PepoChat is the AI support agent we recommend for small businesses that support customers on their website. In 50 questions it never invented a price, plan or feature, it handed off cleanly in every mode we tried, and its weak answers all pointed to content you can fix. It is not the right tool if you need messaging-app channels or compliance paperwork today. For everyone else, the free plan is enough to repeat our test on your own questions before you pay anything.

Frequently asked questions
Is PepoChat accurate?
In our 50-question test on 6 November 2026, a new PepoChat agent answered 34 of 42 factual questions fully correctly and 4 partly, offered a person on 2 and gave a wrong detail on 2. It invented no prices, plans or features. Accuracy depends mostly on your content: every weak answer traced to a missing, mixed or outdated page.
Does PepoChat make things up when it does not know?
Not in our test. When its search found nothing relevant, it said it had no information and offered to connect the visitor with a person. It also refused to invent a discount code or a lifetime deal. Two answers mixed in a wrong detail, such as one plan's allowance in an example about another, which is why you should test your most common questions.
How good is PepoChat's human handoff?
It worked in every mode we tried. A request for a real person was escalated immediately. With the team set to closed, and in email-only mode, the agent showed the away message, asked once for an email, confirmed it and escalated the conversation. The team gets an email alert and replies from the inbox. Inbox replies are not emailed to the visitor automatically.
How much does PepoChat cost?
PepoChat has a Free plan with 100 AI replies a month and every feature except new-lead emails and inbound phone numbers. Starter costs $39 a month for 1,000 replies, Growth $149 for 5,000 and Scale $499 for 17,000. Replies past a paid allowance cost $39 per 1,000, extra seats $15 a month, and yearly billing costs ten months' price.
How long does it take to set up PepoChat?
Our test agent needed two knowledge sources, a two-sentence instruction and a greeting, and its 68-page import finished in well under half an hour. On a live site you then paste one script tag or install the WordPress plugin with your Organization ID. Plan extra time for writing Q&A pairs and testing your own questions before launch.
What are PepoChat's main limitations?
PepoChat runs on your website widget, a hosted chat page, widget voice and inbound phone calls; WhatsApp and Messenger are in limited rollout, and there is no Instagram, SMS or email channel. Everyone uses the same AI model, the "Powered by PepoChat" line shows on every plan, there is no published SOC 2 report and no native mobile app.
